Honestly don't know how to critique you 100% on the technique because I've never worked with this exact method, but the painting seems well-executed and doesn't have any major flaws. I feel like nitpicking too much takes away from even seeing the painting as t is, and part of a work is giving it life and expressing it as it makes you feel, not exactly as it is in reality. As for originality, we've all seen portraits and studies but this feels like it's own certain something.

The only thing that stands out if I examine it really closely is that there's something just off on the right side (figure's left) of the face that doesn't seem symmetrical with the left around the lower nose and mouth. If his face simply is that way in real life then nothing lost, but it feels as though one side has the excess of old age and the other is thinner and more trim. Hope my explanation makes sense.

The color scheme suits the painting: a little somber, a little dour. It also helps the eyes to sit as a focal point for the work, which even without the rest of the painting help to set the mood. Great composition that makes it feel as though even the negative space has "life."

I definitely had to rate it high for impact as I had browsed quite a few pages of submissions and this was the first to really catch and hold my attention.
